The boring one that matters most

Travel insurance for Rhodes with kids: do you actually need it? 🏥

Nobody wants to think about this. But a child with a broken arm in Faliraki, a fever spiking to 40°C on day two, or a flight cancelled the morning of departure — these happen on Rhodes every summer. This page is short, honest, and hopefully the last time you have to think about it.

Short answer: yes, get it. The EHIC/GHIC covers state medical care (helpful), but it does not cover getting your child home if something serious happens — and that is the expensive part. A family travel policy costs less than one dinner in Lindos and covers the scenario that costs tens of thousands without it.

What your EHIC or GHIC actually covers 🪪

If you are EU/EEA citizens, your EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) lets each family member access state medical care in Greece at the same rate as a Greek resident. UK families have the GHIC — same practical effect, free to apply via the NHS website, and it applies to children too (each person needs their own card).

This is genuinely useful — the state hospital in Rhodes Town can handle most things — but it does not cover:

The number that changes minds Medical repatriation by air ambulance from Rhodes to the UK or Germany: typically €15,000–50,000+. A family travel policy covering all four family members for a week: typically €30–80 depending on age and cover level. These are not comparable numbers.

Quick answers

Can I use my credit card's travel insurance for a family holiday?

Some premium credit cards include travel insurance — check the policy document carefully. Common gaps: insufficient medical cover limits, family members not automatically included, activity exclusions. Use it as a supplement, not a substitute for a proper family policy.

What if a child needs a doctor in Rhodes — where do we go?

Minor illness: any pharmacy first — they are excellent and can prescribe. Moderate: the nearest private clinic (your resort reception knows where it is). Emergency: 112 (European emergency number, works everywhere, English available).

Does travel insurance cover a holiday if there's a heatwave warning?

Generally no — weather events that were foreseeable when you booked are usually excluded. The cover is for unexpected events. This is another reason to book your policy at the same time as your holiday, not the week before.
